Sara Lomri

Human rights and public law

Since joining Bindmans in 2006 and qualifying in February 2009, Sara has built up a broad public law practice including discrimination, mental health, mental capacity, prison and inquest law, civil claims for damages, and community care cases. Sara has a respected practice representing people with significant health difficulties, helping them to get care, treatment and access to justice including disabled prisoners; those detained under the Mental Health Act 1983; those without capacity; immigration detainees; and the families of psychiatric patients and prisoners who die in custody.

Sara is a member of the SRA accredited panel of Mental Health Solicitors and is the prison law supervisor for the LSC contract at Bindmans. She conducts her own advocacy before the Parole Board and the First Tier Mental Health Tribunal.

Together with colleague, Charlotte Haworth Hird, Sara regularly advises and trains stakeholders, NGOs and campaigning organisations on issues arising out of deaths of psychiatric patients and linked specialist points of inquest and Human Rights law as well as sitting on the Steering Committee for the INQUEST Lawyers Group. Sara and Charlotte also provide regular advice to Independent Mental Health Advocates on Action for Advocacy’s advice line, on a pro bono basis.   

Sara is an active committee member of Young Legal Aid Lawyers, which involves leading research projects, writing and organising publications, and lobbying decision makers.  She has recently led a detailed investigation into the issue of social mobility within the legal profession, meeting with government ministers, the SRA and the Law Society to discuss the report produced and implementation of the recommendations. Sara sits on the steering committee for the INQUEST Lawyers Group. She is also a member of Police Action Lawyers Group, JUSTICE, and Legal Action Group. Sara regularly publishes including articles in Legal Action Group Magazine and The Independent Lawyer.

Before joining Bindmans, Sara gained several years’ criminal law casework experience at two prominent London firms.  She also worked as a member of the Robert Hamill Inquiry team collating evidence into allegations of state collusion, and at Redress, an NGO which seeks reparation for torture victims.

Sara graduated from University of London (Goldsmith’s College) with an honours degree in Fine Art and Art History and pursued a career in the art world before coming to law.
