Najma Rasul

Najma, who joined Bindmans in December 2007, has considerable experience of advising and representing prisoners on a wide range of issues. She is currently responsible for a mixed caseload consisting of civil actions against the police, inquests into deaths in custody and prison law. She will be developing the practice in the areas of deaths in custody, public enquires, challenging all aspects of the prison system including the treatment and care of vulnerable prisoners and juveniles.

Prior to Bindmans, Najma worked at Harrison Bundy Solicitors where she established the Prison Law Department. She has advised and represented both determinate and indeterminate sentenced prisoners on all aspects of prison law including oral hearings before the Parole Board, disciplinary hearings before Independent Adjudicators and judicial review.

In 2000 Najma became the first caseworker at the Centre for Corporate Accountability, where she advised and represented injured workers and families bereaved from work-related deaths on investigation and prosecution issues. She has extensive experience of inquests into work place deaths, health and safety law, corporate manslaughter and directors liabilities. She has been involved in a number of successful health and safety and corporate manslaughter prosecutions against companies and individual directors.

Najma is currently a Director on the Board at the Centre for Corporate Accountability. She is also a member of the Inquest Lawyers Group, the Human Rights Lawyers Association, the Police Action Lawyers Group and the Newham Monitoring Project.
