Media and Information Law
Bindmans offers an expert, targeted service across all areas of media law and information management. We are known for giving sound, rapid, advice - and for achieving high success rates for all our clients, whether individuals, NGOs or companies.
Bindmans has been the first port of call for more than 30 years for MPs and others in the public eye when their reputations have been damaged by inaccurate media reports. We also act for many ordinary people who have been thrust into the media spotlight. Our clients know they can rely on us for a cost-effective, highly-skilled and personal service.
We also act for organisations who may be defending libel actions or who need to take preventative advice. Our clients range from national magazines and publishing companies, to campaigning organisations and charities. We are used to tailoring our services to clients’ particular needs and budgets.
Defamation
If something has been published about you that is not true and which damages your reputation, we can help. Defamation can be in written form (‘libel’) - say, an article published in a newspaper - or be spoken (‘slander’) - If you have been defamed, we can help you to vindicate your reputation. We may be able to force the person or organisation defaming you to apologise publicly and to promise not to repeat the false allegation. You may also be entitled to damages - financial compensation for the harm caused.
Privacy
If you feel your privacy has been invaded by the media, you may be able to apply for an injunction to stop information being released and claim damages.
Since the introduction of the Human Rights Act, the courts are increasingly acting to protect people’s privacy. Bindmans has been at the forefront of legal developments in privacy cases and is recognised as one of the leading experts in this emerging area of law.
Data protection
Under the data protection legislation, individuals have the right to access some personal information held by companies or public bodies. We can advise on your rights in this area. If necessary, we can make sure damaging mistakes are corrected and seek financial compensation. We have acted in the leading data protection cases and are representing a client in a high profile human rights case in Strasbourg.
Freedom of Information
The Freedom of Information Act has given citizens a new right to access information used by government and other public bodies. We can advise journalists, campaign groups and others about how to get the best from the act and how to challenge public bodies who refuse to comply.
